Tiffany Studios New York "Peony" Border Floor Lamp

This Tiffany Studios New York floor lamp features a stunning leaded glass shade with a lush foreground of peony blossoms, ranging from a vivid pinkish-red to a soft and lustrous pinkish-purple, each framed by a uniquely rendered leaf in varied hues of green. This lush vegetal scene gives way to a multi-hued geometric grid that mimics the sky at dawn or dusk. The piece is finely rounded out by a unique double border at the bottom of the shade, the upper made of mottled amber green glass, and the bottom of another, equally rare, rippled green glass. The shade sits atop a patinated bronze "decorated senior" floor base with a "Pig Tail" finial.

In Victorian times, peonies represented bashfulness, since mischievous nymphs were said to hide in their magnificent petals. With this in mind, it is easy to imagine how the Tiffany Studios New York designer responsible for such a fabulous interplay of color and glass was able to come up with such a playful and multifaceted design.
