Curator's Notes

Since the mid-20th century, the flow of natural unheated Burma rubies, always rare and prized, has diminished markedly. Likely cut from a hexagonal tablet-form crystal, this gem is saturated enough to return intense color to the eye, without the substantial depth that often interferes with an elegant setting. Thus, this ruby's face up outline is that of a gem at least twice its weight. Such a stone is almost unobtainable today from current production, due to source deposit depletion, and the fact that as at least 98 percent of colored gems are now heat treated to enhance their color.
