Daum Nancy "Vignes et Raisins" Cameo Glass Plafonnier

$7,500
This overlaid and acid-etched Daum Frères "Vignes et Raisins" (“Vines and Grapes”) cameo-glass plafonnier depicts abundant clusters of Merlot grapes suspended among curling vines and foliage. Rendered in deep black cameo against a luminous yellow-orange ground, the decoration evokes ripe grapes silhouetted against the warm light of a late-summer sunset. The design was created through cameo glass, a technique in which layers of contrasting colored glass are selectively removed with acid to leave the dark grapevines in relief against the glowing body of the shade. When illuminated from within, the warm ground becomes particularly radiant while the opaque fruit and foliage form dramatic silhouettes across its surface. The broad shade is suspended from three wrought-iron supports terminating in trefoil ornaments and joined above by a coordinating ceiling rosette designed by Louis Majorelle; their dark, sinuous forms echo the curling tendrils of the grapevine while providing a graphic counterpoint to the amber-colored glass. Conceived as a unified work of decorative art, the plafonnier transforms electric light into part of its naturalistic imagery, suggesting sunlight filtering through a vineyard heavy with ripening fruit.
