Created in Paris circa 1972, this Van Cleef & Arpels "Nerval" clematis brooch is composed of amourette wood, diamonds and 18K gold. The large, stylized form is designed as a patinated and subtly patterned amourette wood clematis blossom of five-petals, centering a cluster of round brilliant-cut diamonds, set on a curving stem, with textured gold edges and leaf. One of the firm's "Boutique" collection of youthful jewels, this hard-to-find 1970s amourette clematis unites the firm's long-standing, creative devotion to floral motifs with its 1970s spirit of casual glamor.

The Van Cleef & Arpels Boutique was the brainchild of Jacques and Pierre Arpels. It was established to offer an outlet for their designers' experimental ideas, and to satisfy clients' post-War spirit of ease, novelty and joyful exploration. Van Cleef & Arpels had first experimented with the use of exotic woods in 1916, and the Boutique's playful jewels in this unusual organic material were enthusiastically received.
