This pair of 18K gold, diamond, and turquoise "Ludo Briquette" clip brooches by Van Cleef & Arpels Paris dates from the 1940s. The several variants of Van Cleef & Arpels' iconic "Ludo" style are named in honor of one of the firm's founders, Louis Arpels, who was cherished not only by his associates but also clients throughout the world. The New York Times reported that he was remembered as "... handsome, beautifully dressed, had a sense of humor and exquisite taste. He had a sort of jaunty charm... Customers loved him. They would come just to talk to him and ask his advice, about their clothes ... as well as their jewels." A devotee of all things ballet, Louis collaborated in the 1940s with designer Maurice Duvalet in the creation of the firm's famous ballerina brooches.
